Born Makhpiya-Luta (1822-1909), he was chief of the Oglala Sioux, a warrior and statesman, who for a time successfully resisted United States occupation of what are now parts of Wyoming, and whose deeds marked him as one of the most important Lakota leaders of the nineteenth century. He fought to preserve the authority of chiefs such as himself, and his long and complex life endures as testimony to the variety of ways in which Native Americans withstood their conquest by whites. He is remembered among the Lakota not only as an inspirational leader and fearless warrior but as a loving father, a gifted singer, a man always affable and friendly toward others, whose deep religious faith gave him prophetic insight and lent special power to his prayers.
